      Equine Affaire in California

Come see me at the *Equine Affaire *at the Fairplex, Pomona, CA on
January 31-February 3, 2008. I'll be giving one seminar:
*
Friday at noon - *Horse Careers: What Do You Want To Do? - The point of
the presentation is to give the listeners more choices then
rider/trainer/veterinarian. The talk will cover some of the 250 possible
career opportunities available in the horse industry; what the education
and horse knowledge requirements are for various careers; what the
salary and benefits averages are; how to learn more about possible
careers; and how to prepare yourself for your chosen career. Questions
are encouraged.

I'll also be at Practical Horsemen/Primedia booth after my seminar
signing _Horse Schools_ and answering questions. Learn more about Equine
Affaire <http://www.equineaffaire.com>.

      The Ivies

I've often been asked whether any of the "top" schools have equine
degree programs. Traditional there are eight schools that are referred
to as the original Ivy League Schools. Though most of the Ivies don't
offer equine degrees they all have riding teams. Below you'll find a
list of the eight Ivies and what riding opportunities they offer.

Brown University <http://www.brown.edu>

Brown's Equestrian Team is a Varsity sport and is therefore fully funded
by the college's athletic department. The team holds tryouts during the
first two weeks of classes, but due to the team's popularity placement
on the team is very competitive. They compete in the IHSA. They ride and
train at a private facility in Warren, RI.

Columbia University <http://www.columbia.edu>

The Columbia University Equestrian Team competes in the IHSA. The CUET
welcomes all levels of riders. Lessons are required twice a week. The
members are responsible for paying team dues and the fees for lessons.
They practice at Bergen Equestrian Center in Leonia, NJ. You are welcome
to bring your horse, but are not required to have a horse to be on the
team. Every team member volunteers their time with disabled children in
equine therapy with their partner, Pony Power of New Jersey.

Cornell University <http://www.cornell.edu>

Cornell's Equestrian Team is an all-women Varsity team since 1998 and
competes in the IHSA as well as Polo. The school owned equestrian
facility has a 250 X 90 heated arena and 80 horses ( 23 PE, 30 Polo, 5
team and the rest are boarders). Cornell's horse focused academic
programs are a certificate in General Farrier and Advanced Farrier, a
Bachelor of Science in Animal Science w/3 horse courses, and a DVM in
Veterinary Medicine.

Dartmouth College <http://www.dartmouth.edu>

The Dartmouth Equestrian Team in the IHSA as a Varsity sport open to men
and women from walk-trot to open level. Because it is a varsity sport
all entry fees are paid by the athletic department, but lesson fees are
the member's responsibility. Dressage is a club sport at Dartmouth and
they compete in the IDA. Both teams train and ride at Morton Farm. You
don't have to join one of the teams to ride at Morton Farm. They offer
an extensive English lesson program including Polocrosse. You may board
your horse at Morton, although there may or may not be a waiting list.

Harvard University <http://www.harvard.edu>

The Harvard Polo Team is a co-ed Club Sport. The Harvard Polo Club was
originally founded in 1885 and has come and gone through the years. The
team was reformed several years ago and is small but active. Each team
member is responsible for lesson fees and practices at Castleneck Farms
in Essex.

Princeton University <http://www.princeton.edu>

Princeton University Equestrian Team is Club Sport that competes in the
IHSA as a Hunter/Jumper Team. The team includes riders of all levels and
from various equestrian sports (Western, Polo, Saddleseat, Dressage).
There are more experienced then beginner riders on the team. Anyone
interested in joining the team is encouraged to take lessons with them.
Not all team members choose to show. The team rides and trains at Silver
Dollar Stables once a week, and each member is responsible for lesson
fees. You do not need to bring a horse to be a part of the team, but
students are welcome to bring their own horses. The team also does
non-riding activities such as Toys For Tots, Therapeutic Horsemanship,
and trips abroad (they went to Ireland a few years ago).

University of Pennsylvania <http://www.psu.edu>

Penn Equestrian Team is a co-ed recreational Club Sport with an English
and Western Team. They compete in approximately six shows a semester
through the IHSA. Lessons are offered several times a week. The English
team trains and rides at the Hidden Hollow Farm and the Western team
trains and rides at the Red Wing Farm. Penn State does have a DVM degree
in Veterinary Medicine.

Yale University <http://www.yale.edu>

Yale Equestrian Team and the Yale Collegiate Polo Club are Club Sports.
The YET competes in IHSA and the YCPC competes in collegiate polo. The
teams ride and train at the Yale Polo and Equestrian Center which was
built in 1917 as a training facility for the Army calvary. The higher
level English riders train at River's Edge Farm. All levels of riders
are welcome on both teams. The YCPC had three categories Varsity, Junior
Varsity and Beginners. No riding experience is necessary to join the
club as a Beginner. The YCPC has about 35-40 polo ponies.

Have Your School Included in the Database of Horse Schools

I'm calling for more reviews to be added to the Database of Schools
<http://www.horseschools.net/html/database_of_schools.html> at
www.horseschools.net. Reviews can be submitted by potential students
(visited the school), current students, and past students (graduates).
To submit a review send an email to database at horseschools.net with your
review and include if you wish your review to be anonymous, have your
name (full or abbreviated), or your name with a link for your email for
people to ask more questions.

Calling for Information on Schools That Teach Natural Horse Care
      and/or Training

I'm still collecting data on colleges and universities that teach
classes in natural horse care/management and natural horse training. I
only had one school respond to my call for info on programs. I know
there are more schools that teach natural care and/or horsemanship out
there. If your college's program teaches a class or an entire program is
involved in this method please drop me a line so I can include you in an
article I am working on. You can send the information to
author at angeliaalmos.com. <http://www.angeliaalmos.com>
